Meet Sarah

"Some people make the world special just by being in it"

Sarah Belle Rich was born July 17, 1932, in Reno, Georgia. She graduated from Cairo High School, Cairo, Georgia, in 1949. Sarah moved to Tallahassee, Florida, after graduating high school and worked for while at McCrory's Five and Dime retail store before becoming employed as a nurse's aid at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital's maternity ward. She moved to Chattahoochee, Florida, in early 1951 to enroll in the Florida State Hospital School of Nursing. Sarah met Mathew J. Stephens and they were married December 10, 1951. They had two sons, M. Gene Stephens, born in 1952, and Roger D. Stephens, born in 1957. Sarah and Mathew, at the time of the opening of Sarah's Place, have two sons, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Sarah worked at Florida State Hospital for a time during the 1960's and she worked as a cashier at Bradley's I GA during the 1970's. She was a tireless worker at home and wherever she was employed outside the home. She was very active in the First Assembly of God Church of Chattahoochee in the 1950's, 1960's, and into the 1970's and 80's. Sarah loved fishing and raising vegetables. However, she and Mathew will probably always be best known to townsfolk for the hundreds of miles they walked in Chattahoochee. They were such a daily sight that people became used to seeing them and grew concerned and inquisitive if two or three days went by without them being seen. Sarah has devoted her life to  her God and to her family. Don't be surprised if Sarah greets you with her beautiful smile at our Ice Cream Parlor!
